Every motorist that drives in Colorado knows that auto insurance is required by state law to operate or even own a non-driven motor vehicle (in most cases).

Insurance is constantly compiled and updated by the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is mandatory and verified when registering and obtaining tags for a new vehicle, changing title ownership, etc.

In addition, the DMV has hired a private database firm to run random vehicle VIN #'s and contact the owner if current insurance is not listed in their file.

They mail out a letter to the motorist and require proof within a certain period of time. Noncompliance could result in vehicle registration and drivers license suspension.

Police also require valid proof of insurance when conducting traffic stops or investigating accidents. Fines have increased since a new state law passed 7/1/04 with fines that normally start at $500 and can increase significantly to over a thousand dollars. License and registration suspension or revocation can also be levied by the courts especially for repeat "no proof of insurance" offenders.

But when it comes down to it, many honest, law abiding citizens in Colorado have no idea what auto insurance actually is, what is provides for them or why the state requires it. People ask us, "Why do I need to buy this for my car or truck?"

Insurance is simply a"transfer of risk". The individual or policyholder purchases an insurance policy and pays a relatively small amount of money or premium to an insurance company who accepts their risk and financially protects the policyholder in the event of a covered loss up to the limits of the policy.

The insurance contract is between the policyholder and the insurance company.

The State of Colorado requires a minimum of $25,000 per person bodily injury and $50,000 per occurrence bodily injury and $15,000 property damage coverage per occurrence.

The average person would have a hard time paying $50,000 or even $25,000 to cover the medical care of someone they injured in an auto accident plus the damage to their vehicle.

If someone had to pay that type of bill they could very well lose their home, bank accounts and other assets. That is the financial protection or product that insurance companies provide to their customers in a nutshell.
